Q Eng. 3060J Prof. Ingram Paper #2 Assignment Rough Draft Due Tuesday, June 14th (Introductory paragraph only) Final Draft Due Tuesday, June 21st (Entire Paper) Text: Othello Topic: Write a 1,000-word essay arguing about some element in Othello. The writing technique this paper focuses on is the "Problem Statement," or the introductory paragraph. Remember, however, to include all 5 parts of argument as we practiced in paper #1. This paper will focus on your introduction (see below). Writing Goals: Though you will be completing a 1,000- wd. essay for your final draft, the grading for this paper will be based upon the introductory paragraph, so the word count is not part of the grading for the rough draft. Focus on the elements of argument for your “problem statements” that we studied over the last three weeks. Your introduction must include: a 1) stable context, a 2) destabilizing condition, with 3) consequences for the reader, meaning either explicitly stated costs of not understanding or benefits of understanding the destabilizing condition you introduce, and finally, a 4) resolution, or forecast of answer to come in more detail throughout the rest of the paper. Your claim will most easily fit into the “resolution” part of your introduction. You will turn in this rough draft to the Paper #2 link in our “Paper Assignments”tab on Tuesday 6/14 by 5 pm. On Friday 6/17 by 5 pm you will fill out the worksheet for a peer regarding their draft (that I will send to you) and turn that in to the Bb Discussion Forum. I will also grade your rough draft with comments and by the rubric, so you know what to improve for your final draft, due Tuesday 6/21 by 5 pm. For help on this paper, see course readings and handouts: “Problem Statement” readings on Bb “ProbStmOthello—charter” on Bb Style: Use MLA style and citation form as directed on our course link, “Writing About Drama.”

Othello, the Moor of Venice is a tragedy by a William Shakespeare that was written in 1603 in five acts. The play talks about the story of Othello who was a black general in Venice who appoints Cassio a soldier in his army to the position of chief lieutenant. The act of appointing Cassio does not go down well with Iago, who sets in motion a plan to get back at Othello (Shakespeare 45). He devises a plan to insinuate that Cassio and Desdemona, Othello's wife, have been having an affair. The play ends with Othello killing Desdemona but later learns that she was innocent, and kills himself. The play is full of themes of love and betrayal which are the main drivers of the plot.
